예술가에 의해 재배치되거나 재조합되었을 때 꽃은 저마다의 얼굴, 새로운 ‘화색(花色)’을 드러낸다. 모든 예술적 표현들에서 그런 것처럼, 작가의 예술적 감성이 더해진 사진 작품 속 그 무언가는 더 이상 우리가 알고 있던 그것이 아니다. 그것은 우리로 하여금 사물에 대한 습관적 인식으로부터 벗어나 새로운 시각에서 다양한 의미들을 볼 수 있게 한다. 즉, 한 편의 시詩와 같은 음악으로 우리에게 다가온다. 화색선율 Visages of Mme. Fiore은 꽃이라는 동일한 대상을 소재로 드라마 속 한 장면 같은 음악을 만들어내는, 김용훈과 Diana Scherer의 작품을 소개한다.

김용훈의 <화병>은 단아한 차림의 한 여인을 닮아있다. 온화하고 맑은 미소를 내보이고 있는 여인의 모습을…… 작가는 그의 렌즈가 바라보고 있는 꽃이 여인의 모습을 보여줄 때까지 긴 시간을 기다린다. 그 시간 동안 작가는 한 송이 여인을 곱게 차려 입힐 화병 한 벌을 준비한다. 화려한 아름다움을 뒤춤에 살포시 감추고 있던 그녀는 작가가 직접 준비한 화병을 입는 순간 비로소 은은한 미소를 드러낸다. 작가는 꽃이 가지고 있는 화려한 아름다움만을 보여주려 하는 것이 아니다. 화병과 꽃이 만나, 그 둘이 함께 만들어내는 순간의 극적인 하모니를 들려준다.

Diana Scherer의 <Nurture Studies>에서는 코르셋을 벗는 여인의 음악이 그려진다. 작가는 어떤 꽃이 피어날 지도 모르는 야생화 씨앗을 모은다. 그리고 나서 그것들은 여러 가지 모양의 화병에 심고 6개월 혹은 1년 정도 정성을 다해 기른다. 하지만 꽃이 만개한 순간, 꽃을 감싸고 있던 화병은 벗겨지고 한 장의 사진이 기록된다. 네덜란드의 저널리스트 플로어 팅아(Floor Tinga)는 화병을 벗겨내는 작가의 행위를 “코르셋을 벗긴다(remove the plant’s corset)” (""A Tender Collector"", Nurture Studies, Amsterdam: Van Zoetendaal, 2012)라고 표현한다. 화병이 벗겨지고 나면, 흙 속에 얽히고 설킨 꽃 뿌리가 그것을 감싸고 있던 화병의 모양 그대로 드러난다. '코르셋을 벗기는' 작가의 행위는, 오랜 시간 그 안에 갇혀 야생화인지도 모른 채 온실 속 화초처럼 자라온 한 여인의 삶과 감정을 솔직하게 마주하게 한다.

정성스레 준비한 옷 한 벌과 여인의 은은한 미소가 조화를 이루어내는 <화병>에서의 하모니, 한 여인이 삶의 주체로서 자아를 찾아가는 과정을 보여주는 <Nurture Studies>의 스타카토는 모두 ‘꽃’에 대한 이야기이다. 이 사진작품들 안에서 꽃은 아무 말도 없었지만, 그녀들의 화색은 이미 우리 앞에 음악이 되어 있었다. 그리고 사진이 더 이상 이미지로서 기능하지 않는, 모든 영상이 멈춘 순간에도 그녀들의 화색선율은 그 정지된 공간을 채우고 있었다.

As with all other artistic expressions, a touch of a photographer’s artistic sense turns things we know into totally different ones, to an extent that they do not look the same anymore. This leads us to discover various meanings from a brand new point of view, beyond our habitual way of perceiving objects around us. The exhibition Visages of Mme. Fiore introduces works of Kim, Yonghoon and Diana Scherer, which generate poetic messages of women, using the same material, flowers.

The flower represented in “The Vase” by Kim resembles a woman with a graceful figure, a woman with a gentle and genuine smile. The photographer waits for a long time, until the flower that his lens gazes at transforms itself into a woman. In the meanwhile, he prepares a vase to dress her. She, who has hidden her splendid beauty, upon putting on the vase he brought for her, flourishes her exquisiteness. Kim does not intend to show only the beauty of the flower. Rather, he leads us to experience the dramatic harmony that the flower and vase create at the moment when they unite and become one.

In “Nurture Studies,” Scherer collects wildflower seeds from which she never knows what kinds of flowers will grow, plants them in vases of different shapes and forms and takes care of them with all her heart for six months to a year. At the moment of blooming, the vases that have housed the flowers are removed, and a photograph is taken. Floor Tinga, a Dutch journalist, compared this act of taking off vases to “removing the plant’s corset” (“A Tender Collector,” Nurture Studies, Amsterdam: Van Zoetendaal, 2012). When the vases are taken off, the roots of the flowers all tangled in the soil expose themselves in the same shapes and forms of the unseen vases. The artist’s act of ‘removing corsets’ invites us to confront the life and emotion of a woman who has grown up as a flower locked inside a pot, not knowing it was a wildflower.

The flowers of Kim and Scherer let us see beyond what is presented, transforming themselves into a piece of music, a poem, forcing us to imagine and perhaps contemplate. Though the idea of interpreting their flowers as portrayals of women was not the specified purpose of both artists, their works together when seen as a joint exhibition let us perceive the various stories of a woman, various visages of Mme. Fiore.
