From the Surface in Contact with the World / Young Chae

There are clothes, a scene of clothes in which someone has taken off or placed down, all jumbled together. However, they are not indiscriminately tangled, but rather carefully arranged and touching each other. Some parts of the clothes are magnified to fill the canvas, and other parts show where they are located. Looking at these realistic depictions of the clothing, the audience might seek for the traces of the people who have taken them off, put them down, or once possessed them.

In Young-eun Lee’s paintings, these clothes are above all interpreted as signs. Functioning as signs and symbols, the clothing indicates all at once its absent owners, their gender, age, occupation, nationality, religion, social status and class. Throughout art history, clothing has been used as a symbol for interpreting figures in portraits, as well as icons in religious or historical paintings, implying a social and cultural context. In the contemporary visual lexicon, clothing can be employed as means of communication, for example when it is burnt or torn it can have particular signification, and depending on pattern, material or brand, it can also be imbued with religious or historical significance.

The kinds of clothes and the way they are positioned, as well as the colors and textures of the fabric allow us to interpret the objects depicted in the painting as 'signs of the real’, and then subsequently conjuring the owners of these items. The audience cannot identify the owner of the clothing itself, yet they can begin to make simple assumptions. However, their interpretations are limited. In Lee’s paintings, the clothes are skins that once covered human bodies. They recall their owners but still remain inside the picture plane even after these assumptions are all made, as if their roles as signifiers have merely vanished.

This is because the clothing still functions as an index of their owners while at the same time possessing a minimal narrative. Lee’s new paintings are filled with images of clothes, while her previous works seemed more like staged scenes, where the viewer witnessed the happenings of clothes in spaces without human bodies. Therefore, the message is interpreted by the audience rather than being conveyed through the composition of the scenery. We can no longer draw narratives from the vanished bodies or from the spaces where these clothes are located, but from the surface of the clothes that are displayed without their owners.

In the removal of all other objects, clothing is proposed as being a bare signifier, while their external features—that it covers a human body—are emphasized. The clothes in the paintings may appear chaotic, yet their form and composition are reminiscent of the bodies that once they draped. The contact between the clothes reveal relationships between people. Although we dream of exchanging and communicating our inner sides, these skins—clothes that were created as a means for protection and expression of self—build boundaries between humans and the outside world.

Through these features of clothing the artist seems to illustrate the relationships between people. The depicted clothes disclose the way people hide and express themselves. In other words, how we engage the outside world. We understand that the external skin cannot fully express the object, yet we take it as a standard for value judgments, while trying hard to glamorize it. In the end, this skin becomes the entry point to the outside world, but it embeds the impossibilities of communication, while the truth becomes opaque.

When compared to Lee’s previous series Hug, the new works do not portray figures that are, for example, engaged in human gestures like hugging. However, through the swarm-like composition or tightly-jammed forms of clothing they present a stronger sense of contact. These particular moments of contact are what we experience in our daily lives. We not only have direct contact with families, friends, lovers, or passersby but also encounter people on the internet who are captured through the camera. We have more relationships, or more precisely, a greater quantity of methods of coming into contact with the outside world, but this begs the question of the moment of this contact. What we see or how we are seen, and the relationships we form while meeting and parting with people, may all become mere surface, like the clothes.

The above stated questions constitute Lee’s paintings. The aim of her paintings is not to convey the meaning of the depicted clothes. Rather, Lee continues her attempts to express the idea, that the only way one has access to the world is through external objects like clothes. Furthermore, she wishes to express the relationships between the world of these objects and herself. The artist chooses the object of clothing in order to visualize its relationship to the outside world, rather than exploring its function as a medium through the means of painting. Rather than exploring it as a medium for this relationship, the artist chooses clothing and the means of paint to visualize relationships to the outside world.

Observing the surface of the overlapped fabrics, their wrinkles and the shadows in the paintings, we can see the artist’s attitude towards the boundary of outside world, which aims to expose the relationships through borders instead of delving into the idea of essence. The artist transfers the objects into her painting in the forms of wrinkles and shadows of the fabric, that would otherwise remain as mere surfaces. The audience makes personal interpretations of the clothes in the paintings, recalling their own memories. The meanings of Lee’s paintings lie in the process of various interpretations because the moments of interpretation and the process of remembering are the procedures of relationships themselves connecting people to outside world, which Lee aims to convey through the concept of the clothes.
